United States Air Force C-130 “Angel”

The C-130 Hercules is one of the workhorses of the U.S. Air Force.

Besides being a deadly weapon this beast of an aircraft has the ability to defend itself against some serious enemies.

Seeing this beautiful display will remind you that if you see the C-130 doing this you should either salute or run for your life.

Photos of an Air Force C-130 releasing flares to repel heat seeking missiles. The pattern formed by these “decoys” is how they got their name……..Angels.

It’s truly awesome because maneuvers are usually done in remote areas and over water, the general public does not get to see these exercises.

The flares are used as a defensive decoy to defeat enemy surface to air missiles shot at the Hercules. The angel wing smoke pattern is created by the vortices caused by the props and wings as the flares are fired.

As always we have one more thing to be thankful for: our men and women of the armed forces that live to protect us from any and all threats and make our great country safe!
